Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations Nationwide

This year Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15–October 15, celebrates its nineteenth anniversary. The month incorporates two significant concepts for Latinos, independence and self-identity. September 15 and 16 mark independence day celebrations in several Latin American countries—Mexico, in particular, is celebrating the bicentennial of its independence from Spain and the centennial of its revolution—while October 12 (Columbus Day) is recognized as Día de la Raza. Nationwide, Latinos and their fellow Americans take this time to savor the richness of the Hispanic culture and appreciate the Latino historical legacy.
