The museum was founded 24 years ago in 1985 by Esther Gordy-Edwards, sister of Motown Founder, Berry Gordy, Jr. Housed in a small building originally named, Hitsville USA, it is packed with amazing history. Exhibits include, original costumes worn by the artists; photos; sheet music; a replica of Berry Gordy, Jr.s’ 1960 apartment; and the recording studio where many of Motown’s masterpiece songs were created and recorded. Tour guides take you through the museum, giving intricate details of the evolution of this iconic company. Visitors experience the excitement of recreating dance moves once performed by The Temptations and other Motown acts. The gift shop provides a multitude of memorabilia and nostalgic souvenirs for visitors to purchase.
Audley Smith, Jr, CEO of the museum, is spearheading efforts to expand the museum. It’s a given that the decline of the auto industry has financially brought Detroit to its knees. Most of the talk relative to bolstering the city is focused on battery operated vehicles and green innovation. However, given the proper vision, leadership, and financing, the Motown Museum might very well be “the little engine that could”…set the Motor City back on its feet.
So start your engines, and make it a point in the upcoming year to schedule a trip to Detroit to tour the Motown Museum. I guarantee you the trip will be very worthwhile. You may even leave, “Dancing in the Streets”.
