How To Fight Dry Skin

It’s winter once again and we all know what that means--dry, chapped, itchy skin. Between the constant hand washing to avoid germs, dry indoor heating, and harsh winter wind, this time of year takes a heavy toll on our skin from head to toe.

First, your skin loses moisture, then, it becomes irritated and inflamed, and finally, begins to crack and peel. As soon as you’re all healed up, the vicious cycle starts all over again. Thus begins the constant battle to maintain beautiful healthy skin.

Have no fear, this year you have reinforcements and together we will defeat your dry skin!

These tips will help you win the war against dry skin:
  • Keep baths/showers short and infrequent
  • Use warm (not hot) water.
  • Use all-natural skin moisturizing soap, body wash, and bath oil.
  • Thoroughly dry your skin but gently pat, DO NOT rub.
  • Apply moisturizers right after your bath or shower, while your skin is still damp.
It is also very important to increase the moisture to your skin and body:
  • Use all-natural lotions and moisturizers DAILY.
  • The thicker & heavier the moisturizer-- the better. *NOT PETROLEUM JELLY (see upcoming article “The Dangers of Petroleum-Based Products”)
  • Avoid products with alcohol.
  • Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Invest in a humidifier if your air is dry (Cold air outside and heated air inside cause low humidity. Forced-air furnaces make your skin even drier.)
