Childhood cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease among U.S. children 1 to 14 years of age, taking the lives of more children each year than asthma, HIV/AIDS or diabetes. Every day more than 40 children, the equivalent of an entire school classroom, are diagnosed with cancer, which adds up to almost 15,000 new cases of childhood cancer diagnosed each year. Government and private funding for childhood cancer research is scarce compared to the billions allotted to fight cancers that strike adults.
